Press Release
Cobourg, ON – December 14, 2016 – Northumberland County and Alderville First Nation will receive facilitation support through the Community Infrastructure Partnership Project (CIPP) to establish joint solid waste management projects.
Funded by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and delivered by the
Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the CIPP is providing these capacity-building services for six First Nations – municipal partnerships for two years. The County and Alderville were one of the six successful applicants.
“Alderville First Nation has been in discussion with County staff over the past year regarding the possibility of leveraging County waste management services directly,” stated Chief James Marsden. “Given the timing of this CIPP, we felt it would be very worthwhile to apply to be participants. We look forward to the potential of this arrangement for our residents.”
In October of this year, FCM invited Canadian municipalities and First Nations to
apply to CIPP to establish joint solid waste projects. The initiative will provide tools, resources and direct technical support to First Nation – municipal waste partners to facilitate the development of equitable and sustainable agreements. In particular, two one-day relationship building and strategic planning workshops will be held, and a working group including the County Director of Transportation and Waste, a member of County Council, and members of Alderville First Nation will meet monthly to further the development of the service agreement.
“Council is very pleased with this opportunity for partnership with the Alderville First Nation,” indicated County Warden Mark Walas. “We look forward to working with all parties, and receiving advice and input into the creation of a service agreement, whereby the County will provide services to Alderville residents such as waste,
recycling and leaf and yard waste collection.”
