Joe Dion and the Frog Lake First Nation couldn’t get the money they needed from Canada’s banks. So they looked east – way east
With fewer than 2,500 band members, the tiny Frog Lake First Nation in east-central Alberta is by no means an economic hub of the province. Yet, when a delegation of high-rolling Chinese investors was due in Alberta in April, that’s where they were headed – with their checkbooks in hand. Fostering interest in Frog Lake’s homegrown oil and gas industry is the job of Joe Dion, chairman and chief executive of Frog Lake Energy Resources. Going abroad wasn’t his first choice, but when many Canadian banks were shy to finance the aboriginal community’s resource ambitions in the early 2000s, bypassing the domestics to partner with some foreign capital was a no-brainer.
