A global LNG horse race is gearing up between Australia, Canada, the U.S. and East Africa. With Australia galloping ahead of its counterparts, and East Africa considerably behind everyone else, all eyes are on Canadian and American projects to see which developments get to market first — or at all.

The challenges for Canadian projects are formidable, though not insurmountable.

Among the biggest is logistics. The idea of building a pipeline through the Rocky Mountains compared to semi-ready infrastructure on the undulating terrains of the U.S. Gulf Coast presents a clear disadvantage, says Simon Baines, a partner with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP.

Another key issue would be the deft skills needed to get aboriginal groups on board.
