Toxic workplaces remain a widespread reality across Canada. For many, this means burnout, discrimination, and ultimately walking away. As the CEO of an Indigenous non-profit that delivers education and training services to urban Indigenous peoples in Greater Vancouver, I carry deep concern for how this climate impacts Indigenous talent.
We see firsthand how culturally respectful workplaces can change everything. When Indigenous employees feel seen, honoured, and valued, they thrive. When they don’t, they describe feeling invisible and misunderstood.
A growing force in Canada’s workforce
Statistics Canada projects that by 2041, the Indigenous population will reach up to 3.2 million. At the same time, employers across industries face labour shortages. Indigenous workers could play a vital role in closing those gaps.
