De Beers Charity Classic raises over $50,000 for charity

Press Release –

De Beers hosts business and community partners at annual golf tournament

De Beers is proud to announce the seventh annual Charity Classic Golf Tournament held July 11-12 has raised $50,771 for the Health & Wellness Foundation of Hay River and Hay River Junior Golf.

The event featured 18 teams comprising players from De Beers’ business partners and community members. Including this year’s total, the tournament has raised over $317,000 since it began in 2007, most of which has gone to support the Foundation.

“We started the charity classic as a way to bring our business and community partners together and create a lasting legacy of improved health care in Hay River,” said Glen Koropchuk, Chief Operating Officer for De Beers in Canada. “Thanks to the enthusiastic support of participants this year, we once again had outstanding success.”

Funds were raised by donations from companies and fundraising activities at the Hay River Golf Club.

A team of Hay River golfers who played for Ledcor Group won the tournament with a score of 50, playing a best-ball format. A team representing JDS Mining & Energy finished in second place. The foursome from Tli Cho Logistics won trophies as the tournament’s “Most Honest Team”. Sean Anderson, a Snap Lake Mine employee, shot a hole-in-one on the par three Hole 4.

The Snap Lake Diamond Shootout saw a record 10 shots reach the green during the closest to the pin competition, and for the third time in five years, Robert Bouchard won the 0.5 carat Snap Lake diamond, his shot landing 35 cm from the hole.

“Funds raised at De Beers tournament have allowed the foundation to meet all of its fundraising goals,” said Heather Coakwell, chair of the Health & Wellness Foundation of Hay River. “With the amount raised at the tournament this year, the Foundation has now raised over $1 million since the Foundation was formed in 2000.”

De Beers operates the Snap Lake Mine located 220 km northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories and is Operator of the Gahcho Kué Project, a joint venture project of De Beers Canada Inc. (51%) and Mountain Province Diamonds (49%), located 280 km northeast of Yellowknife.
