It was a small beginning, but an important one, when Irving’s Halifax Shipyard and its subcontractor Flynn Canada Ltd. celebrated the inclusion of four young Mi’kmaq tradesmen in construction work related to Irving’s $25-billion federal ship contract.
Irving says there will be more opportunities for aboriginal workers in its shipbuilding surge. With a training pipeline and procurement structure in place to support that promise, there’s reason to be optimistic it will happen.
It certainly can’t happen too soon. Nova Scotia’s First Nations people have been woefully under-represented in manufacturing jobs and, indeed, in the general workforce.
