The Economic and Community Development Agreement team developed and implemented direction to share mining sector revenue with First Nations impacted by mine developments. This initiative fulfills long‐standing commitments to First Nations, enabling transformative change. The first such initiative in Canada, the agreements have resulted in increased confidence for industry and investors, and strengthened relationships with First Nations communities.

At no cost to industry, this program leverages a portion of mineral tax into significant provincial benefits through earlier production dates for new mines, and safeguards jobs and revenues on expansions. Approximately $12 million in provincial mineral tax revenue was shared in 2013 through the agreements, benefitting 18 First Nations communities.
