Elliot Lake woman wants to overturn decision that homeowners are responsible for cleaning up legacy mine waste

A federal court is set to hear an appeal that concerns who is responsible for the remediation of radioactive waste rock from uranium mines used as fill around homes in Elliot Lake.

In 2024, three women took their case to federal court arguing the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission should order the current owners of nearby uranium mines to clean up waste rock used as fill around their properties in the 1960s.

The uranium mines were operated by Rio Algom, decommissioned in the 1990s, and are now owned by BHP.
