Arrangement dependent on securing power-purchase agreements with BC Hydro
The landscape above Harrison Lake in the eastern Fraser Valley is cut by narrow mountain valleys with steeply-falling streams that, in In-SHUCK-ch First Nation chief negotiator Gerald Peters’s view, are perfect for run-of-river power generation, and a catalyst for his bands’ economic future.
To that end, the In-SHUCK-ch signed a partnership agreement this week with the independent power firm Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. with respect to six separate run-of-river power projects, worth up to $720 million, on streams within their territory in a bold move to kickstart economic development flowing from official treaty discussions.
Under the agreement, the In-SHUCK-ch would share in the ownership and profits from the proposed projects as well as participate in construction through preferred-supplier arrangements.
