In August, several hundred residents of Richmond, B.C., awoke to the news that a court had declared their homes and farms to be on Indigenous land.

Now known as the “Cowichan Tribes” decision, it was the one of the first cases to rule that a claim of Aboriginal title superceded private property rights. As such, a significant chunk of Richmond, B.C., including more than a hundred private lots, fell under the ownership of the Cowichan Tribes First Nation – although the specifics of how that ownership will take shape are yet to be worked out.
