GN announces internet connectivity milestone

Press Release

February 28, 2025

Iqaluit, Nunavut– The Government of Nunavut (GN) is pleased to announce a major milestone has been reached in its efforts to enhance internet connectivity across the territory.

On February 27, 2025, the CRTC announced the approval of the Statement of Work for the Kivalliq-Baffin Connector Fibre Project. This announcement sets the stage for delivering undersea fibre to the communities of Iqaluit, Kinngait, Kimmirut and Coral Harbour, laying the groundwork for faster, more reliable internet services across the territory.

“Bringing reliable high-speed connectivity to Nunavut will be a game changer for our territory – it’s a decisive move towards community-building,” stated Premier P.J. Akeeagok, “Connectivity is a lifeline for small remote communities – it means the ability to access health services and counselling remotely, access remote learning offered anywhere in the world, and the ability to sell goods and services globally. In short, it means opening doors to new opportunities for Nunavummiut.”

“Today’s CRTC approval marks a transformative step for Nunavut towards modernizing our telecommunications infrastructure,” stated Community and Government Services Minister David Joanasie. “By connecting over 80 anchor institutions – including schools, libraries, health centres and community learning centres – this project underpins the GN’s commitment to sustainable community development and economic growth.”

The new undersea fibre infrastructure will serve as a critical link, enabling additional projects to extend high-speed connectivity through the four communities. This network will significantly reduce our dependence on satellite technology, increase telecommunications security, bring new economic opportunities and improve connectivity for Nunavummiut everywhere.
