Harper Government Invests to Support Aboriginal Community Economic Development on Manitoulin Island

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today an investment to stimulate business investment and growth, diversify the local economy and create jobs in the Manitoulin region.

The investment of $500,000 will enable Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation to renovate and expand a community-owned building to create a multi-use centre. The FedNor funding is being directed toward the commercial portion of the facility that will accommodate six business tenants.

Quick Facts

• This project will help create 22 temporary construction jobs, as well as three new permanent positions to operate the facility, which is scheduled to be completed by December 2014.
• Since 2006, through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, the Harper Government has invested more than $315 million in support of 1,500 projects. These investments have supported more than 15,000 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
