Honouring Excellence in Legal Writing

Ontario has awarded the 2016 David Walter Mundell Medal for excellence in legal writing to Sébastien Grammond.
Sébastien Grammond is a professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Civil Law at the University of Ottawa. Professor Grammond is an accomplished researcher and writer, and holds a Doctorate of Law from Oxford University. His book, Terms of Coexistence: Indigenous Peoples and Canadian Law, is an important contribution to the area of Aboriginal law. Throughout his career, Professor Grammond has provided his legal expertise on a variety of complex cases before the Supreme Court of Canada. In 2016, he was elected as a fellow to the prestigious Royal Society of Canada.

- In 1986, former Attorney General Ian Scott created the Mundell Medal to honour Ontario authors who have made an exceptional contribution to legal writing.
- David Walter Mundell was a renowned constitutional lawyer and the first director of the Ministry of the Attorney General’s constitutional law branch.
- The Mundell Medal is awarded by the Attorney General on the recommendation of a selection committee chaired by the Honourable George Strathy, Chief Justice of Ontario.
