N.W.T. Environment Minister Jay Macdonald is expected to make a decision on its future by the end of June
As the Diavik Diamond Mine closes, Indigenous parties are split over whether the Environmental Monitoring Advisory Board (EMAB) should continue monitoring the mine’s environmental impact into the future.
The Tłı̨chǫ government, which was one of the Indigenous parties that helped create the board, supports its wind-up by March 2027.
But the board’s chair, from Łutsel Kʼe Dene First Nation, Charlie Catholique, said both the board and his community want long-term monitoring.
