Kenora mayor open to talks with First Nations – Kenora Online
Kenora Mayor Dave Canfield is hoping for a local solution to the region’s economic impasse.
“I’d really like to see the communities sit down with the forest companies — Miisun, Miitigoog, the forest management company for the Kenora and Whiskey Jack Forest — sit down and come up with some solutions that are good for around here. There are a lot of jobs that are locked up in that forest,” he said.
In recent weeks, Grassy Narrows, Shoal Lake 39 and Wabauskang have all elected new leaders.
In their recent vote, Wabauskang First Nation elected a new chief. Martine Petiquan defeated Leslie Cameron for the top job on council. She’s joined by Jo-Anne Petiquan, Della Vanwynen and Doug Riffel.
The community is located near Ear Falls, and it was one of the community’s involved in last month’s case at the Supreme Court. It challenged the province’s right to issue resource development permits on traditional lands.
