KGHM International Announces New Project Site Plan Update

May 29, 2014, Kamloops, B.C. — KGHM International Ltd. announces today a new Ajax Project site plan that will see many of the proposed mine’s facilities moved farther away from the City of Kamloops. This new general arrangement represents an important adjustment to the Ajax Project. The changes address community comments about the proximity of the proposed mine to city neighbourhoods and other public infrastructure while preserving the economic viability of the project.

Key changes include:

  • Redesign of the tailings storage facility from the previously proposed dry stack tailings storage to more proven wet tailings technology. The tailings storage facility will be located closer to mine operations and farther away from the Coquihalla Highway.
  • Relocation of a waste rock storage facility, the ore processing plant, primary crusher and temporary ore stockpiles. These sites, formerly situated inside City of Kamloops limits, will now be located more than 3 1/2 kilometres from the nearest city neighbourhoods and outside municipal boundaries.

The changes mean potential disturbance from industrial activity in the city will be reduced. The new general arrangement concentrates mine activities and aims to decrease on-site truck traffic, emissions and dust.

KGHM International is the operator of the Ajax Project, a proposed open-pit mine expected to yield roughly 109 million pounds of copper and 99,000 ounces of gold annually for approximately 20 years. The mine is located at the historic Ajax-Afton site southwest of Kamloops, B.C. The site has seen a range of exploration and extraction activity under Teck Resources and the Afton Operating Corp. between 1989 and 1997.
