National Indigenous Peoples Day was first proclaimed in 1996 to recognize the heritage and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Drumming, dancing and ancient ceremony filled Confederation Park on Sunday as Kingston’s Indigenous community gathered to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, an event organizers said continues to grow in both size and significance every year.
The day’s events featured performances, workshops and storytelling aimed at honouring the cultures and contributions of First Nations people — a national observance held each June 21 and rooted in the cultural importance of the summer solstice.
