Kugluktuk, Naujaat and Whale Cove open new air terminal buildings

Press Release

June 18, 2025

Iqaluit, Nunavut (June 18, 2025) – This week, the Government of Nunavut (GN) marks the official opening of new air terminal buildings in Kugluktuk, Naujaat and Whale Cove, celebrating a major advancement in the territory’s airport infrastructure and the communities they serve. The official opening events will take place in Naujaat on June 18, Whale Cove on June 19, and Kugluktuk on June 20.

The new air terminal buildings are designed to serve as long-term infrastructure that will accommodate the evolving needs of each community. With updated layouts, improved accessibility and space to support daily operations, the facilities will enhance the delivery of air services and improve the travel experience for Nunavummiut and visitors alike.

“Airports secure our access to essential goods and services and act as lifelines for our communities. These new terminals make our communities stronger,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut Minister David Joanasie. “We are proud to deliver infrastructure that helps improve access, reliability, and quality of life across the territory.”

Made possible with contributions from Transport Canada and the Government of Nunavut, these projects are part of a broader investment in community-focused public infrastructure across the territory.

Kugluktuk, Naujaat and Whale Cove are three of six communities receiving new air terminal buildings. Facilities in Chesterfield Inlet and Kimmirut opened earlier this year, with Rankin Inlet’s terminal scheduled to open later in 2025.
