Law Society and Métis Nation partner on Louis Riel Day event

Press Release

“The unfinished business of reconciliation of the Métis people with Canadian sovereignty is a matter of national and constitutional import.” ― Supreme Court of Canada in Manitoba Metis Federation v. Canada (2013)

Toronto, ON — The public and the media are invited to join the Law Society of Upper Canada and our partner, the Métis Nation of Ontario, for an event to commemorate Louis Riel Day on November 16. This year marks the 130th anniversary of the execution of Louis Riel. Members of the Métis community traditionally join together on this day to honour and commemorate the life and work of this important Métis leader.

The Law Society hosts an equity legal education event, each year, to provide a forum for members of the Métis and broader Aboriginal community, as well as the legal community. The forum provides the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to the continuing evolution and developing recognition of the rights of Métis people in Canada.

This year’s event, Reconciliation with the Métis: The Road Ahead, features a roundtable of experts and leaders from the Métis community, academia and government who will discuss the following question: What does reconciliation with the Métis look like in the years ahead?
