Press Releases
LEAF turned 30 this year. Our organization has been working toward equality for women and girls since April 17, 1985, when equality rights were enshrined in sections 15 and 28 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
This year, LEAF invites you to join our keynote speaker Dr. Cindy Blackstock and MC Heather Hiscox in celebrating the work that we do and be inspired by the work that is yet to come by attending our 30th Anniversary Persons Day Breakfast Gala on October 21, 2015.
You will have the opportunity to hear from Dr. Cindy Blackstock, whose tireless advocacy work for Indigenous children is changing the face of Canada.
Dr. Cindy Blackstock is the Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada, Associate Professor, University of Alberta. A member of the Gitksan First Nation, Cindy has 25 years of social work experience in child protection and Indigenous children’s rights. Her promotion of culturally-based and evidence-informed solutions has been recognized by the Nobel Women’s Initiative, the Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, Frontline Defenders and many others.
Dr. Blackstock has collaborated with other Indigenous leaders to assist the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in the development and adoption of a General Comment on the Rights of Indigenous children. She has also worked with Indigenous young people, UNICEF and the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues to produce a youth-friendly version of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. She is currently completing a Master of Jurisprudence in Children’s Law and Policy at the Loyola University Chicago.
Our MC, Heather Hiscox, is in her eleventh season answering the 2:30 a.m. alarm to begin the news day as morning host at CBC News Network, bringing viewers all the information they need to start their day. She is a three-time Gemini nominee as Best Host and Best News Anchor. In October, 2011, she received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Western Ontario, and in 2014, she was nominated for Best National News Anchor at the Canadian Screen Awards.
Each year, LEAF brings together over 600 attendees from various backgrounds, including law, academia, education, human rights, labour and community activism, along with 100 students participating in the OJEN Trailblazers: Meeting Women in Law and Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS) programs, to hear inspiring speakers who share our commitment to achieving social justice.
Join us at LEAF’s Persons Day Breakfast Gala on October 21, 2015 and connect with other dynamic and engaged individuals who support LEAF’s goal of achieving equality for women and girls.
