Local Indigenous businesses compete on reality show Bear’s Lair – Edmonton Journal

Edmonton’s Mallory Yawnghwe with Indigenous Box and Matricia Bauer’s new venture Indigenous Bitters are two of 18 pitches vying for $180,000

When Matricia Bauer found out about the new APTN business competition show Bear’s Lair she was ready to go.

“I’ve been in business for 20 years,” says the Jasper-based Cree entrepreneur who owns both the newly minted Indigenous Bitters and Warrior Women, a multipurpose company that offers workshops, tour shows, guided experiences, art and jewelry, and much more. “I thought, I’ll just make my pitch. It was something of a whim.”

The idea was for something she’d been developing pre-pandemic. While working on a plan for a high-end tourism experience involving the herbalism degree she’d picked up from Wildrose College, she began making tinctures. When COVID derailed her plan for a “guest foraging experience” Bauer started exploring, bringing in a mixologist and a chef, both Indigenous, and using them in food and drink.
