Council for the Municipality of the County of Antigonish supported a joint letter from the Strait Area Chiefs, Mayor and Wardens Committee to Nova Scotia Public Works Minister Fred Tilly regarding poor cell coverage in the area.
Antigonish County Warden Nicholas MacInnis said the letter highlights the urgency and continued frustration in rural areas across the province.
A post from January on the county’s website regarding cell coverage states in 2022, Build Nova Scotia completed a cell gap analysis to assess cellular levels and identify gaps. The study found that in Antigonish County, approximately 1,500 civic addresses lack cellular coverage along with about 83 kilometers of unserved primary roads. The post also states Build NS confirmed three new telecommunication towers are planned for Arisaig, Malignant Cove, and North Lochaber, with construction anticipated to begin this year , with the towers expected to improve coverage in those areas and surrounding communities.
