Mackenzie Valley Fibre Link Permitting Application Filed

YELLOWKNIFE (March 18, 2014) – The Mackenzie Valley Fibre Link (MVFL) continues to move closer to reality with the announcement today by Finance Minister J. Michael Miltenberger that the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has filed a permitting application to the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board for preliminary screening of the project.

“Our government is committed to strategic infrastructure investments that will help to grow our economy and allow us to better serve the people of the Northwest Territories,” said Minister Miltenberger. “The Mackenzie Valley Fibre Line will help support the development of Inuvik as a leading centre for remote satellite sensing, promote new opportunities for businesses in communities along its route and enable improved delivery of government services, including increased healthcare and educational opportunities.”

Over the past 16 months the MVFL project team has been meeting with government agencies, regulatory authorities, Aboriginal organizations and the public in communities throughout the Mackenzie Valley to explain the project proposal and gather input to improve the project design, mitigate potential environmental effects and enhance project benefits. The GNWT strongly believes that these aspects of the project have improved as a result of the consultation process. The GNWT looks forward to continuing to strengthen the working relationships as the project is advanced, as well as returning to the communities along the route to discuss the project.

The current schedule would see a contract awarded during the summer of 2014, construction commencing in the winter of 2015 and anticipated completion of the project in the summer of 2016.
