Makivik and the Secretariat Signs an Alliance

Ottawa, ON, Jan. 31, 2014 – Makivik Corporation and the Secretariat to the Cree Nation Abitibi-Témiscamingue Economic Alliance have signed a Memorendum of Understanding for a continued collaboration and support for current and future projects and defining the long-term benefits for both organizations. A signing ceremony was held on Friday, January 31, in Ottawa, Ontario as part of the Northern Lights Event.

The intent of this strategic alliance is to facilitate the process and to explore opportunities of mutual strategic interest. Makivik Corporation with the Secretariat has a large historical background with many activities, events and accomplishments. The alliance builds on the long-standing relationship between the two parties and is based on mutual respect and cooperation.

The Makivik President emphasized that an alliance with the Secretariat demonstrates openness, willingness and relevance to work together with every resident of the Nunavik, the Eeyou Istchee Territory and Abitibi-Témiscamingue in the context of harmonious business development. Mr. Jobie Tukkiapik said “I am hopeful that this alliance will serve to lay a path for progress in ways that we will see benefits for Inuit of Nunavik. This partnership will give us a chance to explore and take part in the wide business network the Secretariat holds and at the same time strengthen our relationship and respective positions, going forward. ”

The President of the Secretariat, Dr. Ted Moses, O.Q. stated that he was very pleased with the alliance: “I have many good friends in Nunavik and we look forward in working more closely in a responsible and sustainable northern development for common benefit.”

As well, representing all municipalities partnered at the Secretariat, Vice-President of the organization and mayor of Val-d’Or, Mr. Pierre Corbeil, expressed the importance of this alliance. “We have all to gain by getting to know each other better and to establish strategic alliances for our respective regions.”
