BISHOPVILLE — Economic development and improving conditions on native communities were front and centre at the fifth meeting of the provincial cabinet and the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs at Glooscap First Nation on Tuesday.

The meeting brought together government ministers and the chiefs from Mi’kmaq communities to discuss things like ways to co-operate on land use and management.

“It was a great opportunity for our chiefs to sit down and talk about some of the issues and concerns of the Mi’kmaq and what we can do, nation to nation, to work together on opportunities,” Chief Sydney Peters, assembly co-chairman, said in an interview following the all-day meeting.

“We know that we can’t do it alone  so I think it’s important that we work together as a group and partner, and this was a good start,” said Peters, chief of the Glooscap First Nation, near Hantsport.

“There was good discussion between the chiefs and the ministers, and they had an opportunity to meet and find out who’s who so we can start working together.”
