Minister Paradis to Attend the First High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation in Mexico

The Minister will meet with global leaders to discuss effective development cooperation to eradicate poverty.

The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, will participate in the first High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation, taking place in Mexico City, April 15–16, 2014. The meeting will bring together Canada and other donors, developing countries, as well as private sector leaders and civil society organizations in a common effort to maximize the impact of international development investments.

The meeting will focus on five themes: progress on implementing international development effectiveness commitments; domestic resource mobilization; development challenges in middle-income countries; South-South and triangular cooperation; and engaging the private sector in international development.

On the margins of the High-Level meeting, Minister Paradis will also host round tables and meetings with Canadian businesses, civil society organizations, and world leaders in development aimed at increasing their involvement in international development, particularly in support of key development priorities such as those related to maternal, newborn and child health, child protection and sustainable economic growth.

• The Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation was established as a follow-up to the Fourth High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness held in Busan, Korea, in 2011 to sustain political dialogue on issues related to the quality and effectiveness of development cooperation.
• The Busan Partnership agreement has been endorsed so far by Canada and 160 other countries as well as 46 international organizations and a wide range of stakeholders.
• Canada has led international efforts to strengthen accountability for results and resources, first at the G8 and the Canadian-led Muskoka Initiative on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, and then as part of the UN Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health. The UN Commission on Information and Accountability for Women’s and Children’s Health,co-chaired by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, put country ownership and accountability for results at the centre of development.
