MSIFN still in talks with Pickering about Consultation Protocol MOU – Durham Radio News

The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) are clarifying the status of an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Pickering as the first nation continues to opposed the proposed Northeast Pickering Secondary Plan.

The MOU would establish a Consultation Protocol. MSIFN Chief Kelley LaRocca and other representatives met with Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe and staff on April 20, but no agreement has been made yet.

The first nation says they’re still against the city’s proposed development plan because of unresolved concerns about the adequacy of meaningful consultation prior to the approval of the Draft Secondary Plan, inconsistency with the Provincial Planning Statement, 2024, unaddressed cumulative impact concerns and the potential for adverse impacts to Aboriginal and Treaty Rights.
