Band working on mine project with Encanto Potash
What could someday become the first Saskatchewan potash mine on First Nations land has moved a step forward with a vote at Muskowekwan First Nation.
Band members voted April 15 and results were released on Thursday.
The band said members said yes to the six ballot questions which would allow for the construction and operation of a solution potash mine on Muskowekwan land.
“The proposed development of a potash mine on First Nation Lands is precedent setting as no other First Nation in Canada has ever undertaken such an endeavour,” Muskowekwan Chief Reginald Bellerose said in a news release.
The band said the number of electors who voted on each of the six ballot questions varied from 436 to 437. There were 1,209 eligible voters.
The Muskowekwan First Nation is working with Encanto Potash Corp. to develop the mine.
