Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin said her background had helped shape her, but it was not central to her role as a judge

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau nominated OBonsawin, a member of the Odanak First Nation, to serve on Canada’s Supreme Court on August 19, 2022, in a historic first for a country making amends for abuses against native peoples.

OTTAWA — Canada’s first Indigenous Supreme Court Justice told Parliamentarians that her background had shaped her, but she would be a judge first and an Indigenous person afterwards, when she takes a seat on the country’s highest court.
