The Honourable Derek Bennett, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Municipalities, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.
PROJECT REGISTERED:
Nain Wind Power Micro-Grid (Reg. 2118)
Proponent: Nunatsiavut Government and Natural Forces
Development Limited Partnership
The proponent proposes to develop a wind power micro-grid, approximately 2 km west of the center of the Town of Nain, to reduce the reliance on diesel generators. The project will consist of either a single Enercon GmbH E‐82 wind turbine or two E‐44 wind turbines and is expected to yield an approximate capacity of 1.8 – 2.3 MW. Additional components will include turbine foundations, battery system with foundation, crane pads for turbine installation, a pre-assembly area and overhead collector line to transmit power to the electrical grid. The site is currently accessible but will require a new access road to the turbines. Project construction is anticipated to begin July 2021 and commence operation in October 2021.
The undertaking was registered on February 10, 2021; the deadline for public comments is March 17, 2021; and, the minister’s decision is due by March 27, 2021.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED ADDITIONAL WORK:
Valentine Gold Project (Reg. 2015)
Proponent: Marathon Gold Corporation
Following public and agency review of the November 3, 2021 submission of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Valentine Gold Project, it has been determined that the proponent must provide additional information to supplement the EIS. This includes further information on, but may not be limited to: caribou baseline information, mitigations and monitoring; other wildlife, including aquatic habitats and avifauna; water resources baseline information; further evaluation of potentially acid generating (PAG) materials, acid rock drainage (ARD) and metal leaching; assessment of potential risks to human health; consideration of future planned projects in cumulative effects assessment; Victoria Lake Reservoir and Victoria Dam; Green House Gas emissions; tailings, waste rock and stockpiles management; discharges and drainage management; closure and rehabilitation; and, effects of the project on outfitters.
