No shortage of candidates in Membertou election – TheChronicleHerald.ca

June 1, 2014

Three running to be chief, 59 seeking council positions

SYDNEY — The election for Membertou chief and council takes place June 19, but the ballots won’t be counted until the next day, says Jane Meader, one of four deputy returning officers for the band.

There are three candidates for chief and 59 candidates for 12 council positions.

“It’s not like the provincial election, where there’s only one candidate,” Meader said. “There’s a lot of candidates and it takes a lot of time (to count ballots). We’ve already put in a full day, so people are really tired and we don’t want to go on another 12 hours.”

There are typically quite a few candidates for council positions, but Meader said this year’s slate is larger than usual.

“It’s above normal, but … we usually run into the 40s. It’s more than normal, but it’s getting to be normal.”
