Five municipalities in Northern Quebec will receive $5,613,856 over the next five years under the new federal-provincial Gas Tax Fund agreement and from the Government of Quebec’s contribution for priority infrastructure projects.

The announcement was made today by the Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, the Honourable Denis Lebel, and Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Pierre Moreau. For the occasion, Minister Moreau was joined by the Minister for Mines and Minister responsible for the Nord-du-Québec Region, Luc Blanchette, and the Member of the National Assembly for Ungava and Parliamentary assistant to the Minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, Jean Boucher.

The funding has been extended and the amount allocated has doubled, increasing from $1 billion to $2 billion per year. It has also been indexed at 2% per year and legislated as a permanent source of federal infrastructure funding for municipalities.
