June 23, 2014

Northwestel, Yukon Indian Hockey Association (YIHA), Kwanlin Dün First Nations and Yukon government’s Department of Justice are collaborating to bring gold-medal Olympian, Stanley Cup winner and healing motivator, Theoren (Theo) Fleury, to Whitehorse, Yukon.

Northwestel Summit Hockey School, in partnership with Yukon Indian Hockey Association, will feature NHL superstar, Theo Fleury, as a guest instructor in their 2014 youth hockey camp “Learning to Lead”.  Other guest instructors include Olympian Jayna Hefford and retired NHL player John Chabot.

Northwestel Summit Hockey School’s “Learning to Lead” camp, now in its 12th season, runs from July 2nd-6th and is now open now for registration.

“Kids from all over Yukon come to Whitehorse for this camp,” said Peter Johnston, Aboriginal Liaison at Northwestel. “We’re the first hockey camp of the summer and are so excited to have Theo helping us coach the kids.”

Fleury will also be the keynote speaker at the Adäka Cultural Festival on July 2nd, at 5:00 p.m. Fleury’s presentation, “Don’t Quit Before the Miracle,” sends a message of hope, moving forward and perseverance. After Fleury’s speech, he will be available to the public for autographs and pictures at 6:00 p.m.

Fleury’s trip to Whitehorse is sponsored through Northwestel’s community investment program. Northwestel contributes more than $550,000 annually to organizations involved in Youth Sport, Aboriginal Culture, Arts and Mental Health. Fleury’s message is very much aligned with Northwestel’s mental health and youth sport initiatives.

“Northwestel recently added mental health to our community investment portfolio,” said Community Investment Manager, Paolo Gallina. “We are inspired by Theo’s story and feel privileged to bring him North to share it.”
