Nova Scotia Power needs better forecasting and a better website: report

HALIFAX _ A consultant’s report says Nova Scotia Power Inc. needs more weather forecasting services and a beefed-up website.

The recommendations from Liberty Consulting Group are part of a review of the utility’s response to post-tropical storm Arthur.

Arthur hit the province early on July 5, leaving about half the utility’s customers _ 245,000 _ without power.

Full restoration took a week and the utility was criticized for its inaccurate restoration times.

After the storm, the utility said the storm hit harder than predicted, and its modelling did not foresee the amount of damaged equipment and subsequent outages.

On top of those problems, Nova Scotia Power’s online outage map crashed due to high demand, and customer service representatives were swamped with calls.
