In Quebec alone, there are 11 Indigenous Nations spread across 55 communities, each with their own culture and history.
The first thing I learn when we enter the teepee is that despite its presence on the Huron traditional site Onhoüa Chetek8e in Wendake, the Huron-Wendat people of Quebec didn’t have teepees; they lived in longhouses.
“We just have the teepee here because it’s what people expect,” says our guide Raphaël Gaudet. “It’s a good place to start the tour and talk about common stereotypes and misconceptions — so you’re ready to meet the Wendat people in an authentic way.”
Authenticity is a major theme when it comes to exploring Indigenous tourism in Canada, and one of the biggest misconceptions that visitors have about Indigenous tourism is that if it’s presented from a contemporary perspective, it can’t be authentic.
