NTI announces May Presidential By-election and Interim Vice President appointment

Press Release

(March 18, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) Membership and the Board of Directors decided, on March 13, 2026, to move up the By-election date for the position of NTI President from December 2026 to May 27, 2026.

In January of this year, NTI Membership appointed Vice-President Paul Irngaut as the President, after the President position became vacant. The Membership decision followed a recommendation from the NTI Board of Directors, because it had been difficult for NTI to effectively represent Inuit over the previous two months with only one executive officer in place.

“The President plays an important role in representing Inuit voices and carrying out NTI’s responsibilities under the Nunavut Agreement,” said President Paul Irngaut. “This election gives Inuit the opportunity to choose the President and to ensure NTI has both a President and Vice-President in place to lead NTI.”

Additionally, the Membership appointed Adamee Itorcheak, Secretary-Treasurer of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), as Vice-President until the conclusion of the By-election to ensure leadership continuity.

“The Board’s priority is to make sure NTI continues its work without interruption,” said Irngaut. “Appointing a temporary Vice-President allows us to maintain stable leadership and delivering on our important mandate while preparing for the By-election.”

To encourage all eligible Inuit voters to participate in the By-election on May 27, 2026, the NTI Board of Directors has decided that NTI will continue providing the $100 gift voucher program, to be funded by mineral resource revenue from the exploration of Inuit Owned Lands.

Further information about the By-election and the gift voucher program will be announced shortly.
