Nunatsiavut Government stands with the Innu Nation and calls for constructive dialogue

Press Release

June 24, 2026

President Johannes Lampe today expressed the Nunatsiavut Government’s full support for the Innu Nation as concerns continue to grow regarding the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s recent actions and statements related to Innu rights, history, and occupancy in Labrador.

“The Nunatsiavut Government stands firmly with the Innu Nation,” he said. “Innu history, rights, and identity must be respected – not questioned, minimized, or undermined.”

President Lampe emphasized that the relationship between Inuit and Innu in Labrador is built on mutual respect, shared experiences, and a deep understanding of each other’s histories.

“As Inuit, we know what it means to have our story challenged or misrepresented. The Innu Nation has shown tremendous leadership and patience, and they deserve a provincial partner that listens, understands, and acts in good faith.”

The Nunatsiavut Government is calling on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to work directly and constructively with the Innu Nation to resolve the issues at hand.

“The responsibility for repairing this situation rests squarely with the Province,” said President Lampe. “Meaningful dialogue with the Innu Nation is essential to restoring trust and ensuring that Indigenous rights and histories are treated with the respect they deserve.

“Our support for the Innu Nation is unwavering. We remain hopeful that the Province will take the necessary steps to address these concerns and rebuild a respectful, honest, and cooperative relationship with the Innu of Labrador.”
