Nunavut and Manitoba share ideas in Churchill – Thompson Citizen

Representatives of all three levels of government from Nunavut met with Manitoba provincial and municipal government members in Churchill for the Hudson Bay Neighbours Regional Roundtable meeting on May 9.

Among the more than 90 delegates who attended were Nunavut Deputy Premier and Health Minister Monica Ell, along with Nunavut territorial government ministers Tom Sammurtok, George Kusugak and Paul Okalik, Nunavut senator Dennis Patterson and Mayor Bob Leonard of Arviat, with MP Leona Aglukkaq, the federal environment minister, attending by phone. Manitoba’s provincial government was represented by Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson and Thompson MLA Steve Ashton, the province’s minister responsible for emergency measures, transportation and infrastructure and Manitoba Lotteries, with Mayor Michael Spence of Churchill also in attendance. Representatives from the mining industry and other businesses also took part.

“This meeting was about expanding the tradition of trade and friendship that has benefited us well for many years as we work together on improving,” said Robinson in a press release. “Working together to realize new opportunities to grow the region’s economy will create good jobs and better services for northerners.”
