Nunavut residents to vote on municipal land sales in 2016 – Nunatsiaq News

Nunavut’s department of Community and Government Services is working toward a March 2016 plebiscite date to ask Nunavummiut whether they want their municipality to be able to sell land.

Under the current regime, as voted on by Nunavummiut in 1995, municipalities can only lease land to people who own homes or other infrastructure.

But the 20-year moratorium expires next year and the Government of Nunavut wants to go back to the people to see how they feel about fee simple land title now.

Roy Green, deputy minister of CGS, said May 26 eligible voters 18 years of age and older will be able to vote in the plebiscite.

The issue arose during a media lock-up prior to the release of the GN’s main budget estimates for 2014-15.

“The availability of land plays an important role in economic development,” Finance Minister Keith Peterson said in his budget address of May 26.
