Online tracker launched for placer mining and mineral exploration applications

The Government of Yukon has launched PermitFlow, a new online tool that allows proponents and the public to track placer mining and mineral exploration projects moving through the Yukon’s permitting and assessment systems.

The launch follows a commitment made by the Government of Yukon during AME Roundup in January to improve transparency, service standards and access to regulatory information for the mining sector.

PermitFlow combines information from the Government of Yukon, the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) and the Yukon Water Board to provide a clearer picture of where projects are in the regulatory process.

Users can search and sort projects by status, file number, project type, class, name, proponent and Traditional Territory. Individual project pages show details such as progress through the regulatory system and its permit status.

The tool is part of broader work underway to modernize, improve and increase transparency of the Yukon’s mining regulatory processes. The government has also delivered on another commitment made during AME Roundup through the creation of an online security and bonding calculator and is updating its website to make it more user friendly and easier to navigate.

Yukoners have been clear that they want a more transparent mining regulatory system. We heard those concerns and moved quickly to develop this new tool so the public and proponents can better track the status of projects and access information more easily. Quick facts

• Mineral exploration and placer mining projects require a mining land use approval and, if the project will impact water, a water licence.
• Projects are classified by the extent of their impacts from Class 1 to Class 4. Projects above Class 1 must be assessed by the Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board.
• The Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board identifies potential impacts of projects and prepares recommendations for decision bodies, such as the Government of Yukon. This process provides an opportunity for interested parties to provide information or their opinions about a proposed project and may result in recommended conditions being applied to authorizations.
• The Government of Yukon issues decision documents after reviewing assessments and consulting with affected First Nations.
• The Yukon Water Board issues water licences. It also has the delegated authority to issue mining land use authorizations for Class 4 placer operations.
