Ontario FOI Law Changes Spark First Nations Concerns – UL Lawyers

In a move causing significant concern among Indigenous groups, the Ontario government has proposed changes to freedom-of-information (FOI) laws that would limit public access to records from top government officials, including the premier and cabinet ministers. This proposal has drawn criticism from the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI), representing 20,000 First Nations citizens across Ontario. They argue that FOI requests are crucial for understanding how decisions affecting their rights, lands, and environments are made. Stacia Loft, deputy grand chief of AIAI, emphasized that access to information is a cornerstone of good governance and crucial for maintaining trust.
