The Orange Shirt Walk was inspired by Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, whose new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her as a six-year-old girl on her first day at residential school.
THUNDER BAY — Nishnawbe Aski Nation hosted its annual Orange Shirt Day Walk from Thunder Bay City Hall to Vickers Park on Tuesday.
The walk saw hundreds in orange, honouring residential school survivors, their families, and the children who did not return home.
Phyllis (Jack) Webstad had her orange shirt taken from her as a six-year-old on her first day at residential school. Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler said she inspired the original movement.
