Phil Fontaine wins business award – Vancouver Sun

Phil Fontaine is this year’s recipient of the Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Relations from the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business. Fontaine served three terms as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, finishing his final term in 2009. He was first elected to public office as a chief at the age of 28 and has been an important advocate for First Nations people ever since. Fontaine was one of the first Canadians to tell his story publicly about Indian residential school abuse and in 2005 negotiated the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement with the Canadian government for compensation for survivors.
