What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
After holding back-to-back virtual huddles with his front bench team and fellow first ministers yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to join Métis leaders from Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta for another round of high-level, in-person discussions on his government’s plan to roll out an accelerated approval process for projects deemed to be in the national interest, which has sparked concerns that it could override Indigenous rights. (10 a.m.)
As per the programme provided by his office, the Métis Major Projects Summit is set to get underway in Ottawa this morning, starting with an on-camera opening statement from the prime minister before the proceedings — which will include an “open dialogue on meaningful consultation” as well as a “working session” on “Métis economic prosperity, partnership and participation” — move behind closed doors for the rest of the day.
