Inflation forecast to come in between 2.5 to 4.5%, food report says compared with 5.9% for this year

Canadians can expect more food inflation in 2024, but that could be good news for consumers, say the authors of a report tracking the cost of eating.

Food inflation is expected to rise by between 2.5 and 4.5 per cent next year in all food categories, according to the 14th edition of Canada’s Food Price Report 2024, released on Dec. 7 by researchers at Dalhousie University, University of Guelph, University of Saskatchewan and University of British Columbia.

Canadians won’t be happy to hear that food prices, a major stressor on household budgets, are predicted to continue rising, but costs have nonetheless come down from the stratospheric increases recorded in the years following the pandemic.
