Why a pan-Canadian electrification initiative matters
A major build-out of clean electricity will create hundreds of thousands of skilled jobs, attract billions in private investment, support building retrofits, and strengthen Canada’s position in the global clean-economy market.
In addition, a more connected national grid would cut costs, improve reliability, lower emissions and allow provinces to share power more efficiently while maximizing low-cost renewable energy.
Clean electrification and efficiency also unlock huge productivity gains, including
- 25–35% reductions in primary and final energy use
- 65% increase in useful energy delivered
- A doubling of GDP over time
In a global economy where low-carbon performance is increasingly a prerequisite for trade, electrification matters. Our competitive edge—and our future export strength—will depend on expanding clean electricity and energy productivity.
The good news? Canada is already starting from a position of strength. We are the world’s eighth-largest market for clean investments, with nearly $50 billion invested in 2024. We are the top destination for global critical minerals exploration, and we rank second in the world for battery supply chain potential. Clean electrification is how we scale that advantage.
What Canada should do next
- Task the Major Projects Office with advancing major clean power and transmission projects as a strategic area of focus.
- Launch a “United Canada” grid initiative that builds interprovincial transmission and energy corridors, respecting provincial and Indigenous jurisdictions.
