Premier doesn’t have consent to change DRIPA, former Green MLA says – Times Colonist

Premier David Eby has heard from over 100 First Nation chiefs who oppose his plan to suspend DRIPA, Adam Olsen says.

Premier David Eby’s move to try and suspend the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act shows the NDP government is in “scramble mode,” says a former Green Party MLA who now leads negotiations for Tsartlip First Nation on the Saanich Peninsula.

Adam Olsen was among the 87 MLAs who unanimously voted to adopt the law just six years ago.

The law is based on the UN’s Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which calls for free, prior and informed consent from Indigenous Peoples on matters affecting their rights, lands, territories and resources.
