The opportunity

New Economy Canada is seeking its next President — a strategic, credible, and relationship-driven leader to guide the organization through its next phase of growth and impact.

New Economy Canada’s strength is its coalition: over 70 companies, industrial sector associations, labour unions, and Indigenous organizations united around Canada’s clean economy transition. That coalition — its depth, diversity, and coherence — is New Economy Canada’s primary asset and the source of its influence. The incoming President will inherit a functioning organization with an established strategy, engaged partners, and a clear mandate. The role is to build on that foundation: deepening partner relationships, extending the organization’s reach and influence, and advancing its policy agenda in a fast-moving national environment.

This role requires a collaborative and hands-on leader who can balance strategic vision with practical execution in a fast-paced and evolving environment at the interface between new public policies and new technologies and business models. The successful candidate will be a confident external leader who is as comfortable in a room with labour leaders and Indigenous executives as with energy company CEOs and federal ministers.

Key priorities

• Advance New Economy Canada’s strategic agenda, in partnership with the Board, and evolve organizational priorities to increase relevance and impact.
• Deepen and sustain engagement with the organizations’ industry, labour, and Indigenous partners — understanding their interests and using judgement to translate their collective strength into policy influence.
• Serve as New Economy Canada’s primary external voice: in media, with governments, at events, and in stakeholder engagements across Canada.
• Expand the organizations’ reach — deepening and broadening partnerships while growing our national profile and funding base.
• Lead and support a high-performing team in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

Core responsibilities

Partner engagement

New Economy Canada’s influence rests on the depth and coherence of its coalition, which spans industry, labour, and Indigenous organizations with different interests, time horizons, and relationships to the energy transition. The President is responsible for sustaining and deepening that coalition: maintaining regular, substantive engagement with partner organizations; understanding what they need from New Economy Canada; and ensuring the organization’s work reflects and reinforces the shared commitments that hold the coalition together.

Strategic and policy leadership

Working with the Board and staff, the President guides New Economy Canada’s policy agenda and ensures the organization is positioned effectively in federal and provincial policy conversations. The organization has an existing strategic plan and program framework; the role is to execute and evolve, not to build from scratch. The President brings political acuity, understanding of the relevant policy landscape, and the credibility to engage senior officials and opposition leaders alike.

External representation and communications

The President serves as New Economy Canada’s principal spokesperson: representing the organization in media, at conferences and public forums, in government engagements, and in collaborative initiatives with peer organizations. This requires comfort operating at a national scale, a clear and confident public voice, and the ability to speak credibly on behalf of its diverse partners.

Organizational leadership and management

The President leads a skilled multidisciplinary team and ensures the organization’s management systems and performance are efficient, accountable, and reflect best practices. This includes leadership of internal operations, culture, and resources are aligned with its strategic priorities. Responsibilities also encompass financial stewardship, talent development, and working with the Board on governance and planning.

Fundraising and revenue development
Working with the Board and staff, the President contributes to the long-term financial sustainability of the organization through partner development, partnership growth, and funder relationships.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate is a senior leader with deep experience working in or alongside complex, multi-stakeholder environments — ideally including both industry and labour — in the Canadian policy context. They bring:

• A track record of building and sustaining trust across a diverse range of partners, including business leaders, labour representatives, and Indigenous organizations.
• Strong political acuity and understanding of Canada’s federal and provincial policy environment, particularly as it relates to energy, industry, and economic competitiveness.
• Exceptional communication and public representation skills.
• Experience with coalition-based or membership-driven organizations, and a genuine understanding of the dynamics involved in holding diverse interests together.
• A collaborative and entrepreneurial leadership style, with the judgment to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• A minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience in public policy, business, association management, advocacy, or related fields.

Qualifications

Required

• Minimum 10 years of senior leadership experience in public policy, business, association, advocacy, or related sectors.
• Demonstrated experience engaging senior leaders across industry, labour, government, and/or Indigenous organizations.
• Experience working with a Board of Directors.
• Strong understanding of Canadian federal and provincial policy environments.
• Proven track record leading externally while building strong internal team culture.

Preferred

• Background in energy, clean economy, natural resources, or related industrial sectors.
• Experience with membership-based or coalition organizations, and with not-for-profit organizations.
• Fundraising and partner development experience.
• Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
• Amenable to travel within Canada.

Location and Compensation

New Economy Canada is a virtual organization with team members in Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa. The successful candidate may be located in any major Canadian city.
