Program expansion provides economic returns for NWT harvesters

May 29, 2014

ULUHAKTOK (May 29, 2014) – An expansion to the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) hide procurement program to include muskox hides has generated over $10,700 in new revenue for subsistence harvesters in the territory’s Beaufort Delta communities since April 1, 2014.

Modelled on the GNWT’s Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program, the new supply chain process is linking Northwest Territories (NWT) harvesters with qiviut buyers in southern markets.  The program expansion responds to a recommendation in the NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy (EOS) to expand the GNWT’s Hide and Fur Procurement Program to support the NWT’s traditional economy.

Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) Minister David Ramsay notes that the expanded program also broadens the economic benefits of subsistence harvesting in the NWT.  “Like any element of our economy, increased returns to investors has positive results – in this case, for the communities harvesters live in,” he said. “The NWT EOS is focused on identifying and advancing these types of opportunities for grass-roots economic growth.”

In its first season, 41 guaranteed advances were provided to resident hunters for muskox hides harvested and prepared to industry standards. Purchased hides will be shipped by the GNWT to southern marketing partners. Resulting sales revenues over the advances provided will be returned directly to individual harvesters.

The GNWT actively supports traditional harvesting as a fundamental component of a modern and thriving economy.  The cost-neutral Hide and Fur Procurement Program is delivered by ITI and supports the traditional economy by guaranteeing sales for traditional harvesters and ensuring a supply of raw materials for creators of traditional arts and fine crafts.

The purchase of muskox hides is currently suspended until the fall after the muskox calving season.
