QIA Board of Directors Meeting Concludes

Iqaluit, Nunavut – March 5, 2026 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) concluded its Board of Directors meeting today in Iqaluit, approving several key resolutions that strengthen governance, support Inuit harvesters, advance conservation efforts, and create new economic opportunities across the Qikiqtani Region.

The Board approved the 2026–2027 Budget, totalling $35,674,403, and the creation of Infrastructure Fund Procedures to guide long-term operational sustainability. Amendments to the QIA Human Resources Manual and a salary structure realignment for QIA staff were also approved to ensure effective organizational operations and consistency.

In support of conservation and community-based stewardship, the Board approved updates to the roll-out plan for Nauttiqsuqtiit Conservation Centres in each Qikiqtani community, as well as the Nauttiqsuqtiit Operational Guide to support consistent implementation.

The Board approved a proposed allocation of $5,830,476 to the Hunters Support Grant, reinforcing QIA’s continued commitment to Inuit harvesters and food security across the region. Edits to the Baffinland Mary River Project Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) were also approved.

The Board confirmed the Kakivak decision to spend $5,668,125 of Indigenous Skills and Employment Training funding on a training program for Inuit marine crew career development.

To strengthen governance practices, the Board approved an Appointments and Nominations Rubric. The President and Executive Director were authorized to enter into open negotiations with Canada regarding the dual designation of Tuvaijuittuq. The Board also approved spending from the existing Qikiqtani Fisheries Complimentary Agreement to increase Inuit access to training and employment opportunities in offshore fisheries.

Additionally, the Board approved several appointments for three-year terms, including Phoebe Etuangat to the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, Mathusalah Kunuk to the Kakivak Association, Sakiasie Sowdlooapik to the Inuit Heritage Trust, Annie Aningmiuq to the Qaummaarviit National Park Joint Planning and Management Committee, Paul Kaludjak to the Qausuittuq National Park Joint Planning and Management Committee, and Terry Kalluk and Katherina Lucy Pudluk to the Sirmilik National Park Joint Planning and Management Committee.
